Sharpen Your Study Time Observation Skills

Setting the Stage

    1. Complete projects and assignments.
    2. Bring the right materials.
    3. Prepare an uninterrupted study pace.
    4. Conduct a short pre-class review.
    5. Participate in class activities.
    6. Relate the class to your goals.
    7. Think critically about what you read.
    8. Be alert to repetition.
    9. Watch for introductory, concluding, and transition words and phrases.
    10. Note the instructor's style. Highlight the obvious clues. Notice the instructor's interest level.

Note Taking Process

    1. Write notes in outline form or paragraphs.
    2. Use key words, pictures and diagrams.
    3. Copy material from visual.
    4. Use a three-ring binder and write on only one side of paper.
    5. Use 3x5 cards for review.
    6. Keep your own thoughts separate.
    7. Label, number, and date all notes.
    8. Use standard abbreviations.
    9. Use blank space.
    10. Use graphic signals.
    11. Use complete sentences when material is important.
    12. Take notes in different colors.
    13. Review your notes within 24 hours.
    14. Edit notes, rewrite to make them neater
