Computer Literacy

Computer literacy is defined as that level of knowledge and understanding of the personal computer, desk-top or lap-top, beyond the mere utilization of word processing software. Word processing utilization might be considered as beginning computer literacy. Beyond that, for intermediate and advanced computer literacy, one should (1) be comfortable with installing and configuring common software, (2) be familiar and use regularly a computer modem, (3) be able to access a computer message center or online service, (4) be able to send and receive messages via electronic mail (e-mail), (5) be able to upload and download computer files with ease and (6) be able to print from the computer.

Computer Hardware Requirements for South Central Online courses

Windows Systems

  • Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 operating system (Windows 7 recommended)
  • SVGA monitor with minimum resolution of 1024 x 600 (1024 x 768 or greater is recommended)
  • Internet Connection with 56.6 modem, DSL, cable modem, etc.
  • Sun Java Runtime Environment v 1.6.x (JRE 6 update 31 recommended)
  • Java Script enabled
  • Cookies enabled

Macintosh Systems

  • Mac OS X (Mac OS X v 10.7 Lion)
  • SVGA monitor with minimum resolution of 1024 x 600 (1024 x 768 or greater is recommended)

Keep in mind that access with the very minimum requirements will work -- faster Internet connections, faster computers and more RAM will certainly be of benefit. Additionally, you may find it handy to have a printer for your own use.

Computer Software Requirements for South Central Online courses

South Central Online students should have access to basic software tools for word processing. SCC recommends using Microsoft Word (Windows or Macintosh version), which is the application our faculty and staff have at their disposal. This common software facilitates conversion of formats across platforms for the exchange of files.

Maintain all software applications at their most current level. Some courses may require computer software as part of the requirements for the course (e.g., a course in statistics may require a statistical software package, etc.). It is the responsibility of the learner to check specific course requirements and to acquire the software used in their course. Instructors will usually identify unique software requirements before the start of classes in their course Welcome Memos and in the course syllabus.

It is STRONGLY suggested that you have current anti-virus software on the computer you are using for on-line courses! As Internet technology expands and new applications become assets to the delivery system for South Central Online courses and programs, additional software and hardware will be required of students.
