Cheiron McMahill, English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Faculty PhotoCheiron is an instructor in Arts and Sciences at South Central College, originally from Seattle, Washington. She came to South Central to create and teach in the English for Academic Purposes courses at SCC. She loves languages, cultures, and supporting the academic success of the wonderful SCC students for whom English is a second language.

She received a Bachelor of Science in Japanese Language and Linguistics from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., then went to Japan to teach English for a few years. That’s when she realized she wanted to be a language teacher.

After returning to the U.S., Cheiron got her Master’s in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA.  Dr. McMahill then returned to Japan, became a professor at a Japanese university, and also obtained her PhD in Applied Linguistics from Lancaster University in the U.K.

For thirteen years, as a volunteer, she founded and directed a non-profit K-12 multilingual community school in Japan for the children of immigrants and international families, many of whom were from Brazil and Peru. Dr. McMahill still likes to volunteer and is proud to be the faculty advisor for the Iqra Al-Quran Student Association and an active member of the Global Education Committee.
