Meet Your Instructor

Dave Edwards, Communications

Faculty PhotoHi everyone! My name is Dave Edwards and I am glad to be your online instructor this semester.

I was born in Silver Creek, New York, a small town on the edge of Lake Erie. After I graduated from high school, I moved around the Midwest to attend college or advance my career. Besides New York, I have lived in Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota. I currently live in Rochester, but work in Faribault, so my commute is more than an hour each way. I know many of you also travel long distances to school or work. That is why I appreciate the ability for each of you to take online courses from home.

I have a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication (1990) from Kent State University; a master's degree in Communication from Indiana State University (1993); and another bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1997).

I worked in the television production and social service industries before beginning to teach. Over the past 20+ years, I have taught at seven different colleges in four different states, including two year and four year colleges. Since 2000, I have been a speech communication/mass communication instructor for South Central College.

Courses I have taught include Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural Communication, Professional Communication, Small Group Communication, Public Speaking, Nonverbal Communication, Conflict Management, Critical Thinking, AA Degree Capstone Course, and Introduction to Mass Communication.

One thing I believe strongly in is SCC's commitment to cultural diversity and global citizenship. I try to incorporate some element of diversity and/or globalization into most of my classes. I love to travel and have been to 35 states (including Alaska and Hawaii ) and several other countries - - Iceland, Guatemala, Germany, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Italy, Mexico, and Canada (and also a day or two in France and the Netherlands).

Thanks for signing up for my online course. My best advice for you is to log onto the course 2-3 times a week, pay attention to the deadlines, and don’t procrastinate. Good luck!
