Meet Your Instructor
Dave Edwards, Communications
Hi everyone! My name is Dave Edwards and I am glad to be your online instructor this semester.
I was born in Silver Creek, New York, a small town on the edge of Lake Erie. After I graduated from high school, I moved around the Midwest to attend college or advance my career. Besides New York, I have lived in Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, and now Minnesota . I live in Rochester, but work in Faribault, so my commute is more than an hour each way. I know many of you also travel long distances to school and/or work. That is why I appreciate the ability for each of you to take online courses from home.
My educational background is quite varied. I have a bachelor's degree in Mass Communication (1990) from Kent State University; a master's degree in Communication from Indiana State University (1993); and a second bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1997).
I worked in the television production and social service industries before beginning to teach. Over the past 16 years, I have taught at seven different colleges in four different states, including two year and four year colleges, both public and private. For the past seven years, I have been a speech communication/mass communication instructor for South Central College. I have previously been the Advisor for the Student Senate, am the President of the faculty union, and serve on various committees at the college. I am also a member of the Rochester Jaycees and the Prairie Smoke Chapter of The Prairie Enthusiasts.
I strongly believe in giving back to your community, and as such I support SCC's efforts to incorporate service learning into the curriculum. I also believe strongly in SCC's institutional core competency of global citizenship and try to incorporate some element of globalization and/or diversity into all of my classes. I love to travel and have been to 35 states (including Alaska and Hawaii ) and seven countries - - Iceland, Guatemala, Germany, Thailand, Malaysia, Mexico, and Canada (and also a day or two in France and the Netherlands). Finally, I believe in lifelong learning. I honestly cannot remember a year since kindergarten that I have not taken a high school or college course. In fact, I have taken college courses from 11 different colleges in my lifetime. Since moving to Minnesota in 2007, I have taken courses from St. Mary's University, MSU/Mankato, Univ. of Minnesota , Rochester Community and Technical College, Bemidji State University, Metro State University, St. Cloud State University, and MSU/Moorhead.
Courses I have taught include Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication, Public Speaking, Nonverbal Communication, Conflict Management, Critical Thinking, Introduction to Mass Communication, and Introduction to Newspaper Writing.
